MEXICO: Outrage over activist killing

The murder of lawyer and women’s rights activist Cecilia Monzón on 21 May has drawn condemnation from many different groups. Human rights organisations, feminist groups, lawyers’ associations and the European Union (EU) are among those to condemn Monzón’s killing and call on authorities to find those responsible. Her murder has highlighted the dangers facing those who speak up to defend others in Mexico – whether through lobbying, legal defence, or journalism – as well as the vulnerability of those who are being defended, adding to growing pressure on the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to offer sufficient protection for these groups.
