COLOMBIA: JEP breaks new ground with ‘false positive’ confessions

Colombia took a symbolic step towards reconciliation on 26 April when, in a historic first, ten former soldiers admitted their role in the ‘false positive’ killings during the country’s internal conflict. ‘False positives’ – the murder of civilians to frame them as enemy combatants and give the impression of military success – continue to blight the reputation of Colombia’s armed forces. The confessions of the former soldiers mark a highpoint for the transitional justice court (JEP), which was established as part of the 2016 peace accords with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group.
