Colombia braces for populist clash in presidential run-off

Colombians want change. That was the clear takeaway from the first round of the presidential election on 29 May, which set the stage for a run-off vote on 19 June between two anti-establishment candidates – Gustavo Petro, of the left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition, and the populist Rodolfo Hernández, representing the Liga de Gobernantes Anticorrupción. Petro sailed through the first round with a 12-point lead. But momentum will now be on the side of Hernández, who can expect an influx of votes from supporters of the defeated right-wing candidate Federico Gutiérrez (Equipo por Colombia).
