NICARAGUA: Ortega intensifies campaign against the Church

Earlier this month Rolando Alvarez, the bishop of Matagalpa diocese, began an indefinite hunger strike citing complaints about growing harassment by the national police (PNN). His action comes amid signs that the government led by President Daniel Ortega is again targeting the Catholic Church, one of the few remaining dissenting voices left in the country, as part of its more general efforts to shut down civic space.
