Morena sweeps to fresh electoral victory

In the space of just eight years Mexico’s left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) has risen to supplant the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) whose state-level dominance stretched back nearly a century. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party, which was only formed in July 2014, won four of the six gubernatorial elections staged on 5 June to control no fewer than 20 of Mexico’s 32 state governorships, and a further two through allies. Although only six states were up for grabs, all were previously held by the opposition, and Morena seized the opportunity to expand its control and underline its popularity halfway through López Obrador’s fourth year in power.
