In the space of just eight years Mexico’s left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) has risen to supplant the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) whose state-level dominance stretched back nearly a century. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s party, which was only formed in July 2014, won four of the six gubernatorial elections staged on 5 June to control no fewer than 20 of Mexico’s 32 state governorships, and a further two through allies.
