EL SALVADOR: Bukele marks three years in office

President Nayib Bukele has celebrated three years since his Nuevas Ideas (NI) government took office. In his balance sheet he claimed multiple achievements, ranging from El Salvador’s economic recovery from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to a reduction in homicides due to his security plan, Plan Control Territorial (TCP) and, more recently, the state of exception declared in late March [WR-22-13]. While the latest opinion surveys indicate he remains hugely popular, others are less enthused by his mandate, which has been marred by accusations of authoritarianism and lack of respect for democracy, not least international NGO Amnesty International (AI) which released a damning report last week accusing Bukele of “engulfing the country in a human rights crisis”.
