PERU: Castillo celebrates Las Bambas breakthrough

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo, assailed by a succession of corruption scandals, impeachment threats, and errant cabinet ministers, finally had something to shout about on 9 June. Indigenous protesters who have paralysed the production of the enormous Las Bambas open-pit copper mine, in Peru’s southern region of Apurímac, since 20 April agreed to a 30-day truce, to permit production to restart immediately, and to sit down at the negotiating table.
