In brief: Inflation picks up in Venezuela

* Venezuela’s central bank (BCV) has announced that monthly inflation in May was 6.5%, up from 4.4% in April. The BCV did not provide figures for annual inflation. Alternative figures, published on 7 June by the opposition-founded independent economic think tank Observatorio Venezolano de Finanzas (OVF), put monthly inflation in May at 10.1%, and year-on-year inflation at 151.0%. OVF had estimated monthly inflation of 3.6% in April, when it calculated that annual inflation was 172%.
