PARAGUAY: Opposition unites against ruling Colorados

A group of left-wing parties and movements in Paraguay announced on 20 June that they would throw in their lot with a catch-all opposition coalition to defeat the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) in the presidential elections in April 2023. Led by Frente Guasu, the party of senator and former president Fernando Lugo (2008-2012), the left-wing groups said they had taken inspiration from the victory of Gustavo Petro in Colombia at the head of a left-wing coalition, Pacto Histórico, comprising 19 parties and movements. Whether the unusual opposition unity endures, given the disparate forces within the coalition, remains to be seen but if it does it will pose a big challenge to the ANR-PC, which is a divided force.
