PERU: Facing a food security crisis

Peru is sliding rapidly towards a major food crisis, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). A growing international fertiliser shortage, worsened by Russia’s war in Ukraine, is threatening agricultural production and intensifying inflation for food products. The government led by President Pedro Castillo has announced a package of measures to boost food production, but is accused by the opposition and farming associations of dithering in its response to the crisis.
