BOLIVIA: Morales moves against top security officials

The growing divisions in Bolivia’s ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) are increasingly crystalising around security issues. Former president Evo Morales (2006-2019), who also holds the presidency of the party, has moved against two of President Luis Arce’s top security officials in recent months. But there are signs that these acts of friendly fire by the Morales faction are not driven by disagreements over policy or a desire to stamp out corruption, but instead to discredit Arce and Vice President David Choquehuanca in order to clear the field for a Morales presidential run in 2025.
