David Collado has highlighted that the country received 644,861 tourists in June 2022 – a record for the month of June. He said that this brings the total number of tourists to visit the country in the first half of 2022 to 3.5m. According to a central bank (BCRD) report last month, tourism arrivals to the Dominican Republic more than doubled to 1.714m in the first quarter of 2022, relative to the same year-earlier period, while revenue from tourism totalled US$2.12bn in the same period, up from US$807.7m in the same period in 2021. Luis Abinader said that a coordinated, multi-sector policy to relaunch the tourism industry (which represents 20% of GDP) had “
saved” the wider economy from the crushing impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The government had created a ‘tourism cabinet’ with daily meetings of representatives of all related ministries (including health and defence) so as to have a consistent overall approach.
