CHILE: Voters suffer buyer’s remorse over constitution

Chile has a shiny new constitution, just as 78% of voters asked for in the referendum in October 2020. Electoral surveys all suggest, however, that they no longer want a new constitution, or at least not the one that is on offer, and will reject it in a referendum on 4 September. There are various reasons for this. Disillusionment with the constitutional convention (CC) that drafted it is perhaps foremost among them. All of this poses a big problem for President Gabriel Boric, whose government has championed the new constitution and has no alternative.
