BRAZIL: Lula tells military to back off

If current opinion polls are right, former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-11) may pull off one of the most outstanding political comebacks ever. Not only has he bounced back from one of the country’s most damaging corruption scandal in modern times, for which he sat in prison for more than 19 months but was later exonerated. But he would also achieve what no Brazilian leader has done before, taking the presidency for the second time by popular vote, with the arguable exception of Getúlio Vargas (1930-1945; 1951-1954)
