In brief: Colombian court rejects case against fracking

*Colombia’s council of state (the highest administrative court) has rejected a legal case which seeks to nullify regulations on fracking projects in Colombia. In a statement, the court said that the rules allowing for the regulation of the practice are legal, effectively allowing contracts for fracking to go ahead. The decision has been condemned by anti-fracking platforms such as Alianza Colombia Libre de Fracking which groups some 100 social organisations across the country which warn that it is damaging for the environment and on water sources as well as being dangerous in the context of the climate crisis. Proponents of fracking in Colombia – including President Iván Duque – have argued that non-conventional hydrocarbon energy sources are essential for Colombia’s economy and energy self-sufficiency. Colombia’s left-wing president-elect Gustavo Petro, who takes office on 7 August, has said that he will ban the practice however.
