In brief: Mexico’s Jalisco state begins exporting avocados to US

*The government of Mexico’s Jalisco state has announced that it will start exporting avocados to the US. In a statement, the Jalisco government said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) had formally authorised the entry of Jalisco avocados following the inspection and certification of more than 8,000 hectares of avocados in over 600 orchards. After ten years of attempts, Jalisco now becomes the second Mexican state, along with Michoacán, to export avocados to the US. Jalisco avocado growers are prepared to initially export 3,000-5,000 tonnes (t) of Hass avocado per week to the US. Official figures indicate that Jalisco’s avocado sector exports more than 113,000t of the fruit to 30 countries every year.
