VENEZUELA: Maduro seeks stronger partnerships in the Middle East
Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro spent 11 days on a tour of some of his country’s strategic allies from 7-18 June, stopping in Iran, Turkey, Algeria, Kuwait, Qatar, and Azerbaijan. The tour appeared timed to coincide with the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, to which Venezuela was not invited. It demonstrated that the Maduro administration does still have key allies around the globe, even if it remains largely isolated in the Americas. Algeria, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran are all fellow members of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and it seems that Maduro is keen to marshal those allies in the face of continued sanctions from the West.
