In brief: Ecuador’s mining exports surge

*Ecuador’s mining & energy ministry has released a report citing central bank figures which show that Ecuador’s mining exports totalled US$1.1bn in the first five months of 2022, up 49% on the same period in 2021, and 41% of its annual target. According to the mining & energy ministry, of the US$1.1bn, US$490m was generated by exports of copper concentrate from the Mirador mine in Zamora Chinchipe province, US$333m from gold and gold concentrate exports from the Fruta del Norte mine, (also in Zamora Chinchipe), while US$278m was generated by small-scale mining. As regards export markets, China accounted for 51% of Ecuador’s mining exports, followed by Switzerland and the US with 10% each.
