* The Mexican branch of international NGO Greenpeace has announced protests against the resumption of infrastructural works on section five of the Tren Maya railway initiative, a flagship project of the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Work on section five of the trainline, which would connect the popular beach towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum in Quintana Roo state, was suspended by a district judge in Yucatán state back in May. Upon recent inspection of the site however, Greenpeace found that machinery was operating despite the judge’s ruling and was leading to further deforestation. The 1,500km project, which would run across the states of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, Campeche, Tabasco, and Chiapas, has faced multiple challenges on environmental grounds. The main objection to section five is that it would pass over and potentially destroy a large system of underground caves and rivers, known as the Great Maya Aquifer.
