PANAMA: Government concessions fail to quell protests

Recent concessions offered by the Panamanian government led by President Laurentino Cortizo [WR-22-28] have yet to end the nationwide protests which erupted over two weeks ago over the high cost of living, signalling the biggest challenge to the Cortizo administration since it took office in July 2019. Government efforts to hold dialogue with the two main protest groups, Alianza Nacional por los Derechos del Pueblo Organizado (Anadepo) and Alianza Pueblo Unido por la Vida (APUV), have so far failed to bear fruit while various sectors are warning of the impact on basic supplies and the economy.
