In brief: Ecuador’s finance minister meets IMF head

*Ecuador’s new economy & finance minister Pablo Arosemena has met International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during a working visit to the US. According to a tweet by Georgieva, the two discussed the continued partnership between Ecuador and the IMF and implementation of the IMF-supported 27-month US$6.5bn credit arrangement under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreed in 2020. While in Washington, Arosemena also met other top officials from multilaterals such as the World Bank (WB) Vice President Jorge Familiar and president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Mauricio Claver-Carone, who reaffirmed IDB support for the private sector, conservation of the Galápagos Islands, socio-economic development in the Amazon and economic reactivation through small and medium-size firms (SMEs) in Ecuador. Arosemena also met senior officials from US institutions, including Michael Kaplan, US Treasury Assistant Secretary for International Markets and Scott Nathan, CEO of the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), an independent agency of the US government, with whom he discussed issues linked to credit lines to support SMEs as well as the development of economic and social infrastructure.
