VIOLENCE: Gang killings top 1,000

Official statistics, published on 12 September, show that organised criminals had killed 1,009 people so far this year. The truly shocking figure is the negligible clear-up rate. Data from the Procuraduría General de la República shows that only one of the 17 gang murders in Tamaulipas this year that are "clearly drug related" have been solved. So far 277 people in Tamaulipas have been killed by gangs, mostly involved in the drug trade. Of the 81 "presumed drug-related murders" in the state so far this year, none have been solved.
