In brief: US to provide fertiliser assistance to Guatemala and Honduras

* Cindy McCain, US ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Agencies in Rome, has announced that the US plans to provide the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) with US$20m for its targeted soil mapping work in Guatemala and Honduras (an initial tranche of money which will also be used in Sub-Saharan Africa). According to an FAO press release, “this type of soil mapping can improve the efficiency in the use of fertilisers and help to boost food security and nutrition”. The aid comes at a time of soaring fertiliser prices and climate shocks causing extended droughts and water stress, which has exacerbated food insecurity in Central America. According to a report published on 25 July by Swiss-based humanitarian NGO Care International, 4m people in Guatemala (total pop. 17.4m) do not have enough food, a number expected to rise to 4.6m by September 2022. Meanwhile in Honduras, food insecurity in the country has more than doubled in less than two years, from 1.3m in 2020 to 2.8m of the total population of 10.2m as of July 2022.
