Uruguay’s China deal fuels Mercosur tensions

Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou assumed the rotating presidency of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) on 21 July. He takes over at a potential crossroads for the bloc’s foreign trade relations caused by Uruguay’s decision to seek a free trade agreement (FTA) with China. Since Mercosur’s inception in 1991 it has conducted trade negotiations with third parties as a bloc rather than individual countries pursuing bilateral deals.
