Daniel Ortega has announced the signing of an agreement to export beef to Iran. Beef is one of Nicaragua’s main exports, with sales worth US$304m in the first five months of 2022, third only to gold (US$410m) and coffee (US$398m), according to statistics from Nicaragua’s export processing agency (Cetrex). Iran and Nicaragua have boosted ties in recent months; the latest agreement follows a visit to Nicaragua in May by Iran’s oil minister,

who floated the possibility of Iran investing in Nicaragua’s Supremo Sueño de Bolívar oil refinery.
