In brief: Argentina’s agribusiness sector responds to Massa appointment

*Argentine agribusiness lobby the Sociedad Rural Argentina (SRA) has responded to the naming of Sergio Massa as the country’s new economy ‘super minister’. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 134th international livestock, agriculture and industry exhibition in Bueno Aires, SRA head Nicolás Pino said that he hoped the new economic leadership was “up to the difficult situation the country is going through” and that it “generates the confidence needed to weather such moments”. Pino stated that the current economic crisis in Argentina was “a consequence of bad policies”, saying if the government wanted to improve the situation, “they must do exactly the opposite of what is being done”. He also stressed the importance of the agribusiness sector, which accounts for 15% of GDP. One of Massa’s challenges will be working to improve the relationship with the agribusiness sector. The Mesa de Enlace umbrella group of farming lobbies, of which SRA is a member along with Confederaciones Rurales (CRA), Coninagro and Federación Agraria (FAA), went on strike on 13 July in protest of a lack of government policies supporting the sector in the face of diesel and fertiliser shortages.
