BOLIVIA: Arce facing simultaneous protests

Around 1,000 peasant farmers from Bolivia’s eastern department of Santa Cruz arrived in La Paz on 1 August, concluding a 900km march intended to pressure President Luis Arce to meet them and discuss their demands for land titles and infrastructure improvements. The march was organised by the Santa Cruz branch of the peasants’ union Confederación Sindical Única de Trabajadores Campesinos de Bolivia (CSUTCB) – a key ally of the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) in the opposition stronghold of Santa Cruz. The next day, violent clashes took place in the capital between police and an anti-government faction of the La Paz coca union Asociación Departamental de Productores de Coca de los Yungas de La Paz (Adepcoca).
