BOLIVIA: New coca company facing same old challenges
In early July, Bolivia’s left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government announced that it will invest B$62.3m (US$9.07m) in the creation of a state-run company to process coca leaves on an industrial scale. The company, to be known as Kokabol, will initially be producing toothpaste containing a coca-derived compound that research suggests can help prevent dental cavities. The intention in the long-term is to develop more products derived from coca and other traditional medicinal plants. The primary Kokabol processing plant is to be located in Sacaba, in the Chapare province of Cochabamba.
