PERU: Castillo hits new nadir

Once again, the net appears to be closing in on Peru’s President Pedro Castillo. Police raided the presidential palace on 9 August, seeking to execute an arrest warrant for Castillo’s sister-in-law, Yenifer Paredes. Paredes was not found and was briefly categorised as a fugitive from justice, before she handed herself in to the authorities the following day. The raid came shortly after yet another cabinet reshuffle by Castillo, who appears to be battling a growing sense of despair among his ministers. The reshuffle followed Castillo’s refusal to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Aníbal Torres, who handed in his notice days after local media reported that Castillo’s former chief aide, Bruno Pacheco, had told prosecutors that he personally delivered bribes to the president.
