ECUADOR: Government defies verdict ordering Glas’ release

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has set up a clash with the opposition, after announcing on 8 August that he would not accept a judicial ruling ordering the release of  imprisoned former vice president Jorge Glas (2013-2017). After the government accused Judge Banny Rubén Molina of contributing to “judicial anarchy”, the attorney general’s office opened an investigation into Molina’s alleged “usurpation of functions and simulation of public functions”. Molina was subsequently arrested on 9 August. His arrest, and the government’s rejection of his verdict, will only fan the enmity between Lasso and the main left-wing opposition coalition, Unión por la Esperanza (Unes), which remains loyal to former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), under whom Glas served as vice president.
