Prime Minister Dr Timothy Harris promised to “create modern history in St Kitts and Nevis” after his Team Unity coalition won re-election on 8 June 2020. He did so. Not by “making the example of the best managed small island state” as he had promised, but for the length of his second term in office. Not once in the 70 years since the first electoral contest with universal suffrage was staged in 1952 in St Kitts and Nevis (and then also Anguilla) had a party called snap elections so soon after triumphing at the polls. Harris was forced to dissolve parliament and hold a general election on 5 August, only 26 months on from the previous election, and three years before another election was constitutionally due, after his cabinet ministers filed a motion of no confidence in him. The opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) led by Dr Terrance Michael Drew capitalised on the rupture of Team Unity to win decisively.
