In brief: Chile launches tender process for lithium mining

* Chile’s state development agency (Corfo) has announced a new call for domestic and foreign companies to submit project proposals for developing value-added lithium products in the country. Corfo has invited mining companies in a bid to create a local industry for lithium-derived batteries, cathodes, and other products. According to a Corfo statement released on 12 August, the tender process is aimed at “companies with verifiable experience, technical and financial capabilities”. These companies “will be able to apply for access to lithium carbonate and hydroxide produced by [Chilean mining company] SQM Salar S.A. at favourable prices, and ensure a supply until 2030,” the statement explained. Corfo said that the call will open on 31 August.
