Colombia is set for major change following Gustavo Petro’s inauguration on 7 August. Petro, of the left-wing Pacto Histórico coalition, has pledged a rethink of Colombian security policy, promising to fully implement the 2016 peace accords with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group and expressing confidence that he can strike a similar deal with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN). Sweeping changes to drug policy and environmental regulations are potentially also on the cards, but Petro will need to forge alliances in congress that could see some of his more radical proposals watered down.
