CUBA: Oil facility fire sparks further difficulties for government

A deadly blaze at an oil storage facility in Matanzas province is threatening to plunge Cuba’s already fragile energy situation into a full-blown crisis. On 12 August the government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced that the fire, which began on 5 August and is considered among the worst in the country’s history, had been extinguished. However, it has exacerbated the already dire energy situation on the island, which stems in no small part from the poor condition of its power plants.
