PARAGUAY: US corruption claims cause commotion

Paraguay’s senate hauled in the foreign minister, Julio César Arriola, on 22 August for some hostile questioning about the present state of affairs regarding Vice President Hugo Velázquez. Three days earlier Arriola had summoned the US ambassador, Marc Ostfield, to a meeting to seek an explanation for the decision by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to blacklist Velázquez for “involvement in significant corruption” [WR-22-33]. Arriola told the senate that Ostfield had not furnished him with any further details, prompting several senators from the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) to instruct him to show some more backbone.
