* Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has claimed in his weekly social media broadcast that the European Union (EU) “wants to accelerate” the implementation of its 2019 trade agreement with the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) because of food insecurity concerns. In the video, Bolsonaro stated that with fires and drought prevalent in much of the European continent the bloc is “concerned with importing food”. Brazil is a member state of Mercosur, alongside Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, and according to Bolsonaro is “producing more and more”. Bolsonaro then emphasised that Brazil’s first concern is with feeding its own people. The EU-Mercosur trade deal was signed in 2019 after two decades of negotiations, but ratification has been delayed due to the concerns of several EU governments about the Bolsonaro administration’s environmental record.
