In brief: El Salvador claims poverty improvement

* El Salvador’s general directorate of statistics (Digestyc) has released its latest survey on household poverty (EHPM) which shows that 24.6% of households were living in poverty in 2021, and 7.8% were living in extreme poverty. This is down from 26.2% in 2020, when 8.6% were living in extreme poverty. As regards multidimensional poverty, which measures deprivations across indicators in other areas such as health and education (rather than just households’ ability to cover the basic basket of goods), 27.0% were living in this condition in 2021 – a slight decrease on the 27.2% recorded in 2020.
