PERU: Castillo turns on police leadership following palace raid

Three weeks on from the 9 August raid on Peru’s presidential palace that led to the arrest of President Pedro Castillo’s sister-in-law, relations between the government and the police leadership continue to sour. On 27 August, Castillo fired the national police commander, Luis Vera Llerena. This came shortly after the government filed a judicial complaint seeking to remove Harvey Colchado, the head of the police’s anti-corruption division which coordinated the raid on the presidential palace.
