BRAZIL: Machismo, corruption, and the economy kick off debates

Neither of the two frontrunners in this year’s presidential race did particularly well in the first debate held by television network TV Globo on 28 August. President Jair Bolsonaro stumbled over his own machismo and frontrunner Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011), the leftist former president, showed signs of battle fatigue.
