In brief: Peruvian gov’t announces aid for small-scale farmers

* Peru’s President Pedro Castillo has issued a decree aimed at “reactivating” the small-farm economy that will see individual grants given to farmers who cultivate up to ten hectares of land. Decree 022-2022 grants the agriculture ministry (Midagri) a value of up to PEN481.94m (US$124.35m) to dispense to the farmers, as well as to fund the operation and monitoring of the programme. Farmers must meet various conditions to qualify for the grant, including growing crops that are “prioritised” by Midagri. It is hoped that the grants will “ensure the development of the agriculture campaign of 2022-2023”.
