In brief: Mexico’s foreign minister visits priority border project

*Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, has visited Chihuahua state to observe the modernisation and expansion works of the San Jerónimo-Santa Teresa border crossing, which connects Chihuahua to the US state of New Mexico. Ebrard said the high-priority project, which is set to be completed before 2024, would allow for 4,000 vehicles to cross at that point a day, up from around 1,500 currently. He added that the strategic position of the site and the willingness of the Mexican and the US governments to carry out the project would be important factors in relocating supply chains and attracting new jobs and investment to the region. The project is part of a joint US-Mexico US$4.2bn investment package dedicated to strengthening security and improving infrastructure along their shared border. It is hoped that the modernised San Jerónimo-Santa Teresa crossing will provide a strong alternative for commercial traffic that currently crosses over the Paso del Norte international bridge, located 20km away, which connects Ciudad Juárez in Chihuahua to El Paso, Texas. In April, Texas governor, Greg Abbott, temporarily imposed new inspections on vehicles crossing from Mexico, prompting long delays and causing significant economic losses.
