COLOMBIA: Early setback for ‘total peace’, but boost in congress

President Gustavo Petro’s efforts to deliver ‘total peace’ in Colombia came under pressure on 2 September when seven police officers were killed by an armed group in the south of the country. They could also hit a hitch as a result of the all-encompassing nature of the endeavour. The Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group has expressed resentment that it is being lumped together under the heading ‘illegal groups’ with criminal gangs lacking any ideological convictions. Petro’s commitment to an overarching peace process in Colombia, however, is one of the reasons why he has managed to forge a broad alliance in congress, which was formalised on 7 September.
