PERU: Political turbulence on all sides

Merely by avoiding the same depths of scandal and self-sabotage reached by President Pedro Castillo’s embattled government, the Peruvian opposition has sought to present itself as a competent and untainted political force over the past 14 months. But on 5 September voters were dealt a reminder, if they needed one, that both the left and right are willing to practice the political dark arts, after the president of congress, Lady Camones, was impeached for plotting legislative manoeuvres that would have given an electoral advantage to her party, the right-wing Alianza para el Progreso (APP).
