*Workers at Mexico’s main factory for multinational car manufacturer Volkswagen, based in Puebla state, have voted to approve a deal for 9% wage increases, following two previously
failed votes on the deal held on 5 and 31 August. The independent workers’ union Sindicato Independiente de Trabajadores de la Industria Automotriz, Similares y Conexos “Volkswagen México” (SITIAVW) had negotiated the deal with the company’s management on 20 July. However, workers twice rejected it. Under the terms proposed in the deal approved on 12 September, Volkswagen de México agreed to backdate the proposed salary increase to 20 July. Mexico’s federal labour minister,
Luisa María Alcalde, celebrated the result on Twitter, stating the contractual revision represented better pay and benefits for workers, and avoided strike action that had been threatened if a satisfactory agreement was not reached.
