ENGLISH-SPEAKING CARIBBEAN: Queen’s passing could provide republican impetus

The Caribbean Community (Caricom) and leaders from the sub-region have all been quick to issue statements of grief and condolences following the death on 8 September of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch. However, in recent months, a drive towards republican status has been evident in some Caribbean territories which retain the British monarch as their head of state – not least following the decision by Barbados last year to become a parliamentary republic. The Queen’s death and end of her reign has sparked speculation that this tendency, which some attribute to the emergence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement and renewed focus on the legacy of British colonialism, could be expedited.
