GUATEMALA: Doubts over government’s declared priority

The government led by President Alejandro Giammattei has unveiled its proposed 2023 budget, for Q112.28bn (US$14.5bn), up from the Q106.23bn approved for 2022. Presenting the budget proposal, the finance minister, Álvaro González Ricci, highlighted food security and tackling malnutrition as a key focus. The Giammattei government had declared this a priority upon taking office in January 2020 as the country has one of the worst malnutrition rates in the region. However, major doubts persist as to the success of the government’s strategy in addressing the issue.
