BRAZIL: Frontrunners scrambling for votes

With less than a fortnight to go before the first round of Brazil’s presidential elections on 2 October, the two frontrunners continue their appeal for votes: former leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (2003-2011) to clinch a first-round win; his far-right rival President Jair Bolsonaro to force a run-off, which would be held at the end of October. In this context, Bolsonaro’s decision to leave the country this week may have seemed surprising.
