URUGUAY: Opposition blasts Lacalle Pou for tobacco reform

President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou is facing a backlash over his decision to issue a decree ceding to a request by the tobacco industry to loosen stringent restrictions, ostensibly to combat contraband cigarettes. The move incensed the left-wing opposition Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, which is demanding that the new decree be repealed. Under the first FA administration led by the late Tabaré Vázquez (2005-2010), Uruguay positioned itself at the vanguard of enlightened public health policy and took on the might of the tobacco industry. The FA accused Lacalle Pou of undoing all of that good work.
