COLOMBIA: Petro makes radical break with the past

There is little doubt about the most striking speech delivered by a Latin American head of state so far at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which is currently taking place in New York. While Chile’s President Gabriel Boric used his debut appearance to extol the virtues of more democracy to deal with the world’s problems in a speech that garnered some attention, Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro used his first address in the forum to denounce the war on drugs in emphatic terms, drawing a polemical parallel with the fight against climate change, while accusing the developed world of hypocrisy.
